Residents' trip to Westminster - 12th Dec '11 E-mail

Nearly 20 people most of whom had never had the chance to see inside the corridors of democracy before, joined Sarah in the Arleen's coach for a day trip touring both the House of Commons and the House of Lords, Westminster Hall and various other rarely seen nooks and crannies, much of it courtesy of the Rt Hon Don Foster, MP for Bath, who took time out of his schedule to welcome the group and show them some hidden treasures.

Sarah said: 'This was well worth the early start - it was especially exhilarating seeing the daily parade when the Speaker John Bercow emerged surrounded by dignitaries to the usual cry of 'Hats off strangers'! It was slightly unnerving to note the number of police officers with huge black guns slung across their chests, but fortunately they had no need of them while we were there!'.
