Think Bike! Signage doesn’t go far enough - 22nd March E-mail

Safety measures recently installed on the notorious A367 between Dunkerton Hill and Radstock are still missing some essential features according to local Councillor Sarah Bevan (Lib Dem, Peasedown) who suggested the safety measures early in 2009.

Collision statistics requested by Cllr Bevan, particularly those relating to two wheel vehicles, clearly demonstrated that motorcycles and push bike riders were at risk at the junctions along this stretch of the main Bath to Radstock road.

Cllr Bevan said:

'I pointed out to the officer in an email dated January 7th 2009 after I checked the plans that Think Bike! signs were needed at all the junctions, not just the two shown on the diagrams. The accident involving a motorbike last Friday proves my point, which went unheeded at the time'.

The frequency of accidents over a number of years prompted local residents to contact the councillor, and some were also unhappy that the lowering of the speed limit excluded the Peasedown bypass, also part of the A367.

Gail Coleshill, Prospective Lib Dem MP for the new North East Somerset constituency who witnessed an accident while observing driver behaviour on the bypass last year, added:

'As a cycling enthusiast, I really feel for cyclists in our very congested, car friendly country. The least that should be done is to install highly visible signage at all the danger points along our roads, with cycle lanes a priority where speeds are high.'

Cllr Nathan Hartley (Lib Dem), whose brother Chaz travels daily along this route by motorbike, concluded:

'I do worry about Chaz and his biker friends, especially when the police accident records suggest a much more immediate and detailed response'.
