Residents living in North East Somerset are being encouraged to seek help if they’re not ready for the digital TV switchover beginning on March 24th. Just over a week away, the digital switchover will start to see terrestrial TV channels, those received via an analogue aerial, disappear. Many homes are already digital using; Freeview, Freesat, Virgin Media, Sky or BT Vision, but there are a small number of residents who are unaware the switchover it taking place. Last week, Councillor Nathan Hartley and Bridget Petty from the Switchover Help Scheme toured Peasedown St John to raise awareness of both the switch over and the free phone help scheme for certain groups within the community. The Help Scheme set up by the BBC and funded by the government helps eligible people convert one of their TV sets to digital. Bridget said: “Understanding digital TV, and what the switchover means can be quite complimented, that’s why this help line has been set up.” Currently, the following groups of people are eligible for help and advice: · People aged 75 and over · Anyone who has lived in a care home for six months or more · Individuals who get, or could get, Disability Living Allowance, or Attendance Allowance, or any kind of mobility supplement. · People who are registered blind or partially sighted. Bridget added: “My work involves travelling around North East Somerset, raising awareness of the helpline and encouraging these eligible groups of people to get the support they are entitled to, the scheme is available until the 3rd May 2010. It’s really important that people in the community look out for one another and make sure their neighbours and family have digital TV by March 24th.” Cllr Nathan Hartley believes it is important no one gets left behind. He said: “The majority of people have made the switchover, but those that haven’t will be left with no TV service after the second switch on 7th April. It’s very important that anyone who is unsure whether they have digital TV or not, or will be able to receive TV channels after the switch over should contact the helpline straight away.” Residents can contact the Digital Switchover Help Scheme by calling 0800 40 85 900 or by visiting: www.helpscheme.co.uk
