![]() Local resident Jay Symes was alarmed to find the self close mechanism on an old gate leading onto a bypass near his home in Peasedown St John had broken, leaving the gate wide open at the end of the footpath which issues out onto the 50 mph bypass next to it. A new gate and fencing has now been made by the company, despite its surprise at finding itself the landowner.
The area houses many families with young children, and the path is the only way through to the bridle path for dog walkers. Mr Symes contacted his local councillor Sarah Bevan who identified the land owner as Persimmon Homes Wessex.
Cllr Bevan said:
'In the past where safety for residents is at stake, Persimmon Homes has come to the rescue, even though the company was unaware that it owned these parcels of land. I'm very pleased that the management agreed through its contractor to fund not only a brand new gate but also fencing either side just to make sure the path is now completely safe for everyone'.
Other areas where Persimmon has built new safety structures to keep both motorists and pedestrians safe include Orchard Way also in Peasedown St John and extra planting along other stretches of the A367 Peasedown bypass.
Jay Symes added:
'This has been a worry not just for my family but for all the neighbours too - we rest easy in our beds now that the new, much more substantial gate is in place.'
