Elected to serve the residents of Peasedown St John in 2003, Sarah juggles single parenthood with her role as local councillor and for 2010/11 the Chairman of Bath & North East Somerset Council. Her three children attend local schools and her two cats don’t.
Here’s a bit more about Sarah: Name: Sarah Frances Bevan (nee Owen)
Councillor since: May 2003 when she and Gail Coleshill took both seats from Labour
Born: London Political Party: Liberal Democrat member since some time in the 1980s
Reason for standing for election: Anger and the obvious need for happier communities Reason for choosing the Lib Dems: The party’s active ideals of Equality, Liberty and Fraternity in local communities Achievements so far - A safer Peasedown St John: Old Forge Way, New Buildings – now have 20 mph speed limits; the bypass now has two pedestrian refuges and a pedestrian crossing where dog walkers and families need them most; Eckweek Gardens now has disabled driver parking spaces A cleaner Peasedown St John: drew up new cleansing rota with officers, adding roads hitherto never swept or maintained
A greener Peasedown St John: Orchard Way – persuaded First Group plc to add an additional bus service from the new estate into Bath; added extra collections and repairs for litter bins; Bath Road – informed residents with recycling and assisted collections
Additional roles held on Bath and North East Somerset Council -
Safeguarding Human Rights for all: Sarah’s Jewish background inspires her, as Human Rights Champion, to devise lively presentations explaining why the Human Rights Act 1998 is important to us today. She organises the council’s annual Holocaust Memorial Day and has visited secondary and primary schools around the authority to give short illustrated talks for children and young people on their rights and responsibilities.
Safeguarding employees and employers: as the only Liberal Democrat member of the Employment Committee, Sarah enjoys working with Trades Union Representatives and Managers to ensure fair tribunal hearings for officers when the going gets tough.
Ambition: to achieve even more for the people of Peasedown St John and see my children become happy, fulfilled adults. Same goes for the cats.
Favourite food: Banoffee pie and Marmite toast (not necessarily in that order)
