Young people give village a spring clean - 20th April '09 E-mail

YOUNG PEOPLE in Peasedown St John have spent their Easter holidays giving the village a spring clean.

Members of the local Youth Community Council joined councillors, youth workers and council officers in offering residents the chance to dispose of any unwanted household items and belongings for free.

As part of the national ‘Big Clean Up’ initiative the event took place over two days in Albert Avenue, Frederick Avenue, St John’s Close and Sunnyside View.

During the two-day event, as well as over 30 bags of rubbish being collected through litter picking, 10 sofas, more than 10 TV sets, 5 mattresses and 8 fridge-freezers were taken away by the Bath & North East Somerset Cleaning department.

The spring clean action days were put together by B&NES Council officers and local Councillor Nathan Hartley. Nathan said:

“The idea of this event initially came from the Youth Community Council who told me they wanted to put something back into the community and try and make a difference. As a result I liaised with our Cleaning Department and youth centre staff to put on our own local ‘Big Clean Up’.

Over these two days young people have spent many hours moving rubbish for residents and cleaning up their neighbourhood.

As well as the young people I would like to thank Rex Brown, Jo Brain, Andrew Lapham from the Cleansing Department and Bridie Marshall from Peasedown Youth Centre for their hard work.”

Youth Community Council members will now receive certificates for their work and involvement.

Midsomer Savouries in Midsomer Norton sponsored the event by providing donuts to everyone who took part.
