Open letter to newspapers - 1st March 2009 E-mail

Dear Editor,

We write in response to the article in this week’s Somerset Guardian (26/02/09) ‘No plans to cut funds to children’s centres’.

We were horrified to read that our Labour MP, Dan Norris, has suggested that the successful children’s centre in Peasedown St John will close.

For many months the centre, based in Peasedown St John Youth Club, has been hugely popular with parents and young children, giving them greater access to advice and support.

The children’s centre staff are committed fully to providing the help and encouragement some first time parents need who want the best start in life for their children.

Dan Norris’ claim that the centre will close is not helpful and does nothing to encourage village life. To suggest that one of our key facilities will no longer be in use is nothing but ignorant scare-mongering and demonstrates a worrying lack of factual knowledge on his part.

We hope he will apologise to users of the children’s centre in Peasedown St John, and the wider community, both for his remarks and for his obvious lack of research on this matter.

Yours faithfully,
Cllr Sarah Bevan
