Action plan drawn up for year ahead - 9th Feb '09 E-mail

Young people in Peasedown St John have drawn up a plan for community action on what they would like to do in the village over the coming year.

Last week at the first Youth Community Council meeting of the new year youngsters agreed to target their efforts on giving the area a spring clean. With support from B&NES Council young people are organising a bulk collection day – giving residents the chance to throw away any old appliances or household furniture.

Planned to take place in the Spring, collection points will be set up in Frederick and Albert Avenue for people to dispose of any unwanted items. Before the event, members of the Youth Community Council will be deliver leaflets informing residents about the day.

Working with the group is local B&NES Councillor Nathan Hartley (Lib Dem, Peasedown) who said:

“This community spirited act shows that young people care just as much about their living environment and the cleanliness of their neighbourhoods as their older counterparts.

Following our meeting last week I have been in contact with officers from Bath and North East Somerset Council who have agreed to help set-up a bulk collection day. During the event, young people will be on hand to help residents to dispose of their rubbish.”

At last week’s meeting it was also decided to organise some fundraising events to support Tommy’s Charity – a national organisation set up in 1992 to carry out research into the causes and prevention of premature births and miscarriages.

As well as this young people will also be raising money for a local 18 month old baby boy who has been diagnosed with quadriplegia cerebral palsy.

If residents would like to help in any way with the Youth Community Council’s fundraising activities contact the Youth Leader at Peasedown Youth Centre, Bridie Marshall, on 01761 432294.

Other issues discussed as part of the Council’s community action plan included a youth shelter and a community farm.
