Safety bollards go in and pedestrian crossing gets makeover in Peasedown St John - 17th July '08 E-mail
A parade of shops and other essential services has been made much safer for residents, now that bollards stopping motorists driving onto the pavement have been installed. The pedestrian crossing make-over will complete the series of new safety and anti-congestion measures along this busy, high street-style stretch of hairdressers, veterinary practice, newsagents and public house.
Cllr Sarah Bevan said:
"This has been a long time in the planning stage, and consideration had to be given to the coach company opposite to ensure that the turning sweep was not inconvenienced. I have been worried about the safety of shoppers and people with sick pets for a long time, and am pleased we all found a solution to the problem, albeit only a partial one,
The problem is that the pavement is the same level as the road, but major alterations to this are impossible due to water drainage which would be compromised if the levels were altered. There are also residential properties along this stretch so it is a real composite combination of retail and services, all of which must be taken into consideration."
There have been many reports of dangerous driver behaviour along this parade, including and especially at school collection times, when parents park directly outside shops, driving onto the pavement where other children are walking home.
Cllr Bevan added:
"The situation is, of course, different for drivers with a disability, who can quite legally wait outside these amenities, but always being mindful not to drive along the pavement and looking out for animal patients coming out of the vet.
I would like to make a plea for drivers in a hurry after school to use Greenlands Road public car park, located directly behind these shops, rather than parking on the pavement and thus endangering fellow residents and their children and their pets."
