Dear Editor, Roy Hilliar from Timsbury is not the only one feeling disappointed that the Government are cutting yet more funding from Universities and Higher Education Colleges (YourLetters, 01/05/08). Unfortunately under this government we have seen the slow privatisation of education, making it part of the competitive market, throwing hundreds of thousands of young people into debt and hitting the poorest worst. The government expects universities to maintain high levels of performance despite cutting essential funding at the same time. Mr Hilliar is among many who feel for the students falling into increasing levels of debt because of Labour’s student tuition fees – the average student now paying around £3,000 per year. Education is and should be a basic human right that everyone is entitled to. Receiving an education shouldn’t be based on how much money you’ve got or what university you can afford to attend - but on our own abilities and desire to succeed in the things we do. I am sorry to hear that Dan Norris has not replied to Mr Hilliar’s letter he sent in January. This increasingly seems to be the case with many of my residents now coming to me for advice and help after not hearing anything from the MP. I guess it just goes to show you can have the forth highest expenses in the country, employ all the staff in the world but still replying to one of your constituents can be the hardest thing imaginable. Yours sincerely, Nathan Cllr Nathan Hartley Liberal Democrat, Peasedown St John
