HUMAN RIGHTS ALIVE AND WELL IN PEASEDOWN ST JOHN - 26th April '08 E-mail
After a false start last month, local councillor and Human Rights Champion provided a diagram for the council's contractors to follow after calls for help from three households with disabled drivers contacted her for help with their parking problems.

The residents, one of whom is an amputee, were unable to park within a reasonable distance from their homes, due to measures put in to reduce congestion on the nearby Bath Road.

Cllr Bevan said:

"I take disabilities very seriously, both as a local councillor and the Human Rights Champion, so I was delighted when these spaces were confirmed by the council's parking facilities team. The slight hiccup earlier was almost comical, with contractors aiming for the wrong end of the lay-by, but all's well that ends well, and these spaces are in the perfect location to make these residents' lives a little easier."

Leslie Palmer, whose wife Gladys has a mobility disability, first contacted Cllr Bevan on behalf of all the residents living close by earlier this year and was overjoyed to have his anxieties about finding a space within walking distance of their home allayed. Leslie commented that he and his wife were having difficulties parking, and were afraid to go out on their usual trips in case they couldn't get near their house afterwards.
