Emergency Work on Path Gives Independence Back to Residents - 19th Jn '08 E-mail

EMERGENCY WORK has been carried out in Peasedown St John on a path that was so uneven mobility scooter users were too afraid to use it, which is a key route to the local shops for villagers.

Before Christmas, District Councillor for Peasedown, Nathan Hartley (Lib Dem), received a call from an elderly resident who had not been to the shops for 2 months because of her fear of using the path.

Cllr Hartley said;

“The path, which links Ashgrove to Bath Road, had become increasingly uneven due to the roots of near-by trees trying to push through the concrete to the surface. Several weeks ago Mrs Gulliford from Eckweek Gardens contacted me to say she just couldn’t bear it anymore and asked if anything could be done. I contacted B&NES Council’s Highway’s Department who responded immediately.

Sometimes I feel that Council Officers get a bad press so I would like to say thank you for responding so quickly – you have made many of the mobility scooter users in Peasedown very happy people.”

Resident Mrs Gulliford says the new path has given back her independence;

“The uneven path had made it very difficult to get to the shops. I have been so frightened to drive my scooter over it that I had just stopped going out. There are many people in my situation and just by flattening the path we all have been given our independence back.”
