Senior Tory Cllr says 'no' to extra street lighting E-mail

Disappointed residents are none the wiser as to why their request and petition for some street lighting in their area has been turned down after the presentation to Full Council over two years ago by local resident Steve Pillinger of a petition signed by the whole street has been turned down.

Care worker Steve said:

"I am amazed that after nearly 3 years, the decision has come out to refuse. There are scores of elderly people living here, and many residents won't use this street to get home because it's so dark."

The area, well known to local police officers as a favourite for drug pushers and users, has no lighting on the section through the estate leading to the new part of the village.

Residents alighting at the bus stop on Ashgrove use the badly lit route regularly to walk home and during winter months in particular are not confident about walking through the area in the dark.

Cllr Bevan said:

"This is an extraordinary decision for the cabinet to take. There was huge support for this scheme both from local police and from Community Safety groups to make this potentially popular link between the old and and the new parts of the ward a safer, more pleasant route for residents.

I will be lobbying the conservative members responsible for the final decision to refuse funding very hard indeed."
