A community group in Peasedown St John is attempting to create Zero Waste next week as part of the Bath and North East Somerset Council’s awareness week to reduce the amount of rubbish we throw away. The group, however, is different to the many others taking part because it is entirely virtual. Peasedown First was created earlier in the year as a Facebook group by Cllr Nathan Hartley (Lib Dem, Peasedown) for residents to communicate and debate local issues online. Nathan said: “Peasedown First is the village’s first ever online community forum. It’s an opportunity for local people to chat online, share ideas and another way for residents to contact Cllr Sarah Bevan and myself. To spice things up a little I’ve decided to enter the group in next weeks Zero Waste initiative. The aim is for people to become more consciously aware of the amount of rubbish they throw away and how each one of us can make practical changes in our lives to look after the environment more.” Bath and North East Somerset Council has allowed the definition of ‘community’ to be as flexible as it can be to encourage as many people as possible to take part. Members of Peasedown First will take part in Zero Waste Week separately but everyone’s scores will be tallied together to see what the overall score of the group is. Any Peasedown residents wishing to take part should join Facebook at www.facebook.com and type ‘Peasedown First’ into the group search field. Residents who want to take part separately from Peasedown First can still do so and should contact Cllr Nathan Hartley on 01761 300522 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
