| Four years on, was it right to go to war in Iraq? |

Dear Editor,
I am glad to see that, four years on from the illegal invasion of Iraq, every major news network is dedicating time to the current situation in the country. In the past four years over ₤5 billion has been spend on this war and the cost is still increasing. 134 British servicemen have lost their lives and hundreds more have been wounded or maimed. If that’s not enough, last year alone 34,452 innocent Iraqi civilians died with at least 50,000 since the war began.
Despite what our government tells us the situation is not improving and the country is on the brink of civil war. Since the invasion ONE THIRD of Iraqi’s now live in poverty. I think that’s not just a tragedy – it’s a crime! The Iraq war is one of the most disastrous and immoral events in human history – I feel ashamed to think that our government has any part to play in that. I find it difficult to believe that such a crime could be carried out by a Labour government – a party that used to believe in the internationally rule of law, a party that used to be one of the people, and a party that used to be party of principles. Personally, I think unless we see a phased withdraw of troops very soon this will become another Vietnam. An endless and pointless war where the only people that suffer are the innocent. Seeming that the Labour Party of the 21st century is one that has chosen to align itself with George Bush perhaps that is what we should to remember when going to the polls on May 3rd. Yours faithfully, Nathan Hartley
