Liberal Democrats in Peasedown St John have called for the age at which aerosol spray cans can be bought to be raised from 16 to 18 years of age.
One of the factors that contributes to the presence of unsightly graffiti in communities is due to the ease with which spray paint can be purchased.

Lib Dem campaigner Nathan Hartley, who has been leading a successful campaign to make Peasedown a graffiti free zone, said:
“Graffiti, in the wrong places, is both unpleasant to see and a crime incentive. The causes of vandalism are vast and therefore tackling such anti-social behaviour is not something that can be done over night. We believe, however, that by raising the age at which people can buy aerosol spray cans from the current 16 years of age to 18 years of age would help immensely.” Research carried out by Peasedown Liberal Democrats last year shows that as many as one in two people are concerned about the plight of graffiti, mess and litter in their neighbourhood. Lib Dem councillor for Peasedown St John, Cllr Sarah Bevan, added: “Restrictions on the sale of such substances should not just be a national directive but retailers should also take responsibility when selling such goods. As with cigarettes and alcohol, young people are able to purchase these because they are often not asked to produce any identification or even questioned on their age.” However, test purchasing in Peasedown St John has shown local retailers do sell responsibly. Nathan Hartley has written to the Home Office to highlight the concerns of local residents and also contacted the Lib Dem Shadow spokesperson for Home Affairs, Nick Clegg.
