20 mph speed limit a 'must' say residents after cat killed and several near misses E-mail

The residents of a quiet ancient village street are so perturbed by the rise in through traffic and heavy lorries thundering down their street on a daily basis, they have called upon their local councillor to urge traffic and safety officers to act quickly before any further incidents occur.

Cllr Bevan said:

"I drew up the petition for these residents after being contacted by several householders, anxious for action to be taken after a family pet was killed recently. Residents have been very proactive and took the petition round themselves to gather much needed evidence that this is what the whole community wants and needs."

The increase is due to through traffic leaving the A367 at Dunkerton and driving along country lanes never intended for the amount of traffic and size of lorries.

Carlingcott village is also affected, since the same traffic hits this village first before speeding on towards New Buildings.

A protest gathering is planned to include residents and their pets in a bid to raise the profile of this situation, which residents have described as "a tragedy waiting to happen".

Cllr Bevan added:

"I would like to see not only a speed restriction which can be enforced, but a weight restriction warning placed at the crucial junctions where commercial drivers are tempted to use these villages as rat runs".
