200 + attend council's Holocaust Memorial Commemoration with survivor speaker - 3rd Feb '12

There was standing room only last week when Professor Lob, invited to speak in Bath on International Holocaust Memorial Day by the council's Human Rights Champion Cllr Sarah Bevan, gave his account of his imprisonment in the camp aged 11, his rescue by the controversial Reszo Kasztner and how he has come to terms with his experience.

Cllr Bevan, daughter of a Viennese survivor, said:

'I read Professor Lob's translation of an Hungarian Holocaust memoire last year and knew that Ladislaus would be a moving and interesting speaker for our event this year.'

Dr Hanna Diamond, Reader in History at Bath University, is also the offspring of a survivor. She gave the closing remarks and thanks to the Professor from Sussex University.

Cllr Bevan added:

'It is interesting to note that survival after an attempt at genocide is not always easy, and Professor Lob demonstrated that with humour and gravitas during his address and his question and answer session afterwards.'

10 years of Focus - January 2012

For almost ten years, Focus has been one the most widespread community newsletters in Peasedown St John, Carlingcott and Braysdown. A quarterly newsletter from your local B&NES councillors, it keeps local people informed of what they're doing in the community. Sarah said:

"Since our first issue in 2002, over 100,000 newsletters have been delivered either by us, or our volunteers.

It's such a useful way for us to keep local people updated with what we are doing on their behalf. Some of our most successful campaigns have featured in Focus over the years, and will do for many more years to come."

funds new balls and shirts for Peasedown Athletic - 28th Jan '12

Local councillor Sarah Bevan was impressed last Saturday by the latest change to Peasedown Athletic Football club. This time it's the players' shirts and new balls that made a stunning impression, which she funded through the ward councillors' initiative fund.

Sarah said:

'Those shirts were well worth the wait - I passed the modest amount over last year, but the shirts were delayed for some weeks just before Christmas. The team looks even smarter now, and were on the field limbering up with the balls well before the match!

Congratulations to Percy Clark and the many other volunteers who continue to enhance the fortunes of this much loved club.'

Carlingcott residents share ideas for new year - 28th Jan '12

Last week, Nathan was invited to meet a group of Carlingcott residents who wanted to share views about their community.

The event, organised by local Parish Councillor Richard Formby and Ross Thompson from Laurel Farm, gave the 25 in attendance a chance to have their say on a wide range of issues, including:

Activities for children and young people
Social events
Flooding
Planning issues
Winter gritting

Nathan said: "This was a very positive meeting. People came along to share concerns about winter weather, but also wanted to look for opportunties to work with others to enhance facilities in their village.

I'm grateful to have been invited by Richard and Ross, and look forward to going again in the future."

Youth Parliament election gives young people a voice - 23rd Jan '12

Young people are being encouraged by Bath & North East Somerset Council to have their say on local issues that matter to them by voting in the UK Youth Parliament elections taking place next week.

In Bath and North East Somerset, two Members of Youth Parliament will be elected on Thursday 2 February. One will represent Bath and the other will represent North East Somerset. They will come together to work on projects that affect both regions and at national and regional events to represent the authority.
